"You hem me in -- behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me." Psalm 139:5 David found comfort in the fact that God was always close by. Others, whose life is spent hiding from God, might not find similar comfort in such a thought. When David became king after Saul's death, his enemies sought to kill him. As the Philistines moved on his position, David was told of the pending danger. It's significant to me that this threat to Israel closely resembled what David faced when he defeated Goliath. Same enemy - similar threat. (Re: 2 Samuel 5:17-25) Maybe this is the reason David found so much comfort from God's abiding presence in and around his life. He had experienced victory over this enemy once before. It was as if his enemy was looking for a weakness in his armor, even though they knew it was by Jehovah's hand that David was made king. Would David know God's strength again? Remember, as a young man facing Goliath, he proclaimed, "The battle is the Lord's". Would he find that to be true today? Yes he would. I sure David prayed before facing Goliath, but we don't have much information about when he did it or what he said. But, as the king of Israel, David's prayer is well documented as he faced an old enemy with fresh faith; "Shall I go and attack the Philistines?" Will you hand them over to me?" Just as quickly, God answered and told him, "Go, I will deliver the enemy into your hands." What about you? Are you facing enemies you thought were long gone? Have you experienced victory over an enemy at some point in your life, just to see it raise its ugly head one more time? Do you still have the faith needed to overcome your fear one more time? David's consolation in Psalm should give us comfort. It's not our ability that helps us overcome fear today. Rather, it's faith in the One who gives us strength that gives us confidence. God Almighty has not changed nor has the fact that He gives strength to those who trust Him. What's in doubt today is the level of your dependence upon God. Are you fully trusting Him, or have you learned to use and trust your own ability, asking God to bless your effort? David knew the difference. Have you learned that lesson? Just Thinkin'...
