Your Enemy by Name The Canaanites, Part 1 of 5 "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us." Hebrews 12:1 As descendants of Ham, Noah's son, the Canaanites were one of Israel's oldest and most fierce adversaries. Even the name "Canaan" implies disobedience and sexual misconduct. Genesis 9:18-28 reveals the curse of Canaan and the following chapter lists a roll call of Israel's future enemies - all direct descendants of Canaan! These Phoenician inhabitants of the land called Canaan were polytheistic and worshipped every man-made god imaginable, including El, Baal, Anath, Asherah and Astarte, to name a few. It's believed they even had a god named Jehovah. Whether or not they thought they could conjure up the power of YHWH is not known. It's true that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. But it's likely the Canaanites did not intend to flatter Israel as much as flesh out a cheap imitation of YHWH in order to defeat Israel. God's enemy is our enemy and he is called many names. If we are to persevere in our Christian race, we must get rid of any and everything that holds us back and trips us up. May we learn every name of our Enemy, realize that he has been defeated and then proceed to live like we believe it. LESSON ONE. When THE HOLY SPIRIT prevails, we stand on the truth of God's Word, and reckon the Enemy as already defeated in Jesus' Name. Our enemy's name is DEFEATED. The next time you feel cornered by him, why not call him by his name? Just Thinkin'... WebServant (1) Scripture comes from the Holy Bible,
