Dealing with
Strongholds The Canaanites' religious debauchery was a sign of their deep moral degradation as their worship was based on objects of sexual inference, like fertility and unnatural sex acts. In fact, their devotion to such sensual activities led them to view human sacrifice as the ultimate act of worship. The Israelites worshiped the Ashtoreth at different times in their history and God turned His wrath on them each time they did. (Re: Judges 2:13-14) The Canaanites were members of the Anak tribe identified in Numbers 13:29. The Israelite spies who were sent from the desert of Paran into Canaan described the inhabitants living there as "powerful giants living in large fortified cities". Archeologists tell us that the Canaanites mostly lived along the Jordan River. They are also believed to be closely akin to the Amorites because many of them lived in the hill country as neighbors.
